Domain Names Terminology

This will be a list of domain name terms that are commonly used in the industry. I hope this eases some confusion or at least educates a few people out there. There's nothing more frustrating than talking to customer service and not understanding the words they're saying.
Administrative Contact: The administrative contact is an individual authorized to make certain changes to a domain name on behalf of the registrant. This person will tyically have the ability to transfer a domain name, so it's recommended to be someone the registrant trusts.
Appraising: Evaluating a domain name and determining the value of that domain in the market.
Country Code: These are special TLD's that refer to a specific country. For example, .us is the United States while .ca is Canada.

Yahoo! Domain Name Private Registration

Did you know that anyone and everyone can find out your personal information just by looking up your domain name online? The Internet's governing body ICANN, Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers requires that every domain owner's information be listed in an online database. Unfortunately, spammers, stalkers and solicitors lookup this database every single day.

Make sure the domain name is unlocked

Domain names that are "locked" with Yahoo! Domains can't be transferred. To unlock a Yahoo! Domains domain name:
  1. Go to http://domains.yahoo.com.
  2. If necessary, sign into your Yahoo! Domains account using your existing Yahoo! ID and password.
  3. Click Domain Control Panel.
  4. Click Edit Domain Locking.
  5. Locate your domain name in the table.
  6. If the domain name is locked, the page will display "Locked". Click the large Unlock Domain button.
  7. On the next page, click the large Unlock Domain button to confirm the action.
  8. You will be returned to the Domain Locking page, which should show that your domain name is now unlocked.
It may take up to 24 hours for Yahoo! Domains to notify the central domain registry that the domain name has been unlocked. During this time, you can still place the transfer order on our Web site. We'll start the transfer as soon as the central registry knows it's been unlocked.
